My guest today is Ian Gaines. Ian is the Government Relations Assistant Director for The Consortium of Social Science Associations (COSSA) in Washington D.C. COSSA is a nonprofit advocacy organization working to promote and advance the social and behavioral sciences in federal policymaking. Ian has worked with Black Bitcoin Billionaires, Bitcoin Policy Institute, and is co-authoring a book, writing a chapter focusing on economic empowerment. Needless to say, he has played a huge part in a lot of behind the scenes policy work regarding bitcoin in the U.S. In this conversation Ian shares his personal bitcoin journey, provides historical context around financial alternatives needed for marginalized communities in the US, discusses assumptions some progressives have about bitcoin, emphasizes the importance of free speech principles, and touches on upcoming crypto policy/legislation and needed research on bitcoin’s real-world societal impact.

Today I am joined by Anita Posch. Anita is a renowned Bitcoin educator, author, and founder of Bitcoin for Fairness, a non-profit initiative raising awareness and understanding of Bitcoin for people in emerging countries and for disadvantaged communities. Anita also has a new online platform we discuss, “Crack the Orange,” A scholarship program for aspiring educators and builders in the Global South to foster knowledge and boost Bitcoin adoption.

In addition to all these things she’s been busy working on, we discuss the importance of bitcoin for marginalized communities and how bitcoin enables freedom for all through permissionless and borderless access. We discuss stories of people using bitcoin to escape authoritarian regimes, gain financial freedom, and overcome obstacles from the legacy financial system and how bitcoin has the potential to unite people across borders, genders, and ideologies if the community focuses on bitcoin’s humanitarian benefits over politics.

Today we are joined by former Governor of New York, David Paterson. Governor Paterson is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who was the 55th governor of New York, succeeding Eliot Spitzer and serving out nearly three years of Spitzer’s term from March 2008 to the end of 2010 following Spitzer’s resignation. Governor Paterson has made history as the first legally blind governor in the nation, and the first African American Governor of New York. I was most interested in having Governor Paterson on the show to discuss his time as governor of New York during the Great recession. He did not disappoint…His candor, storytelling, humor, and openness to technologies like Bitcoin made this one of my favorite conversations. It was also refreshing to hear from a Democratic politician who is open to bitcoin and the ideas it represents as a tool to utilize in the face of a system that, “clearly isn’t working” in his words.

Today we are joined by Jason Maier, High School Math teacher and author of “A Progressive’s Case for Bitcoin”. We get into his book, imagining a different system and way of thinking about things, speaking to progressives about bitcoin and his journey as a life-long learner and educator, and more. I think Jason has written one of the best introductory books on Bitcoin that can engage anyone, but especially those from the political left. He does incredible work educating people about bitcoin and how it is not antithetical to progressive values, but rather folks may find bitcoin aligns very well with many of their progressive values.
